Bye-Bye Binky

Kalia has been an angel baby. She hardly ever cries and when she does it is for a very short amount of time. She is also my only baby that has ever taken a pacifier. The doctor said that I should get rid of the pacifier when she turned one. Of course I didn't do that. Now she is almost two and is very attached to her binky. I had promised myself that I would get rid of the binky as soon as school was out, but then I just couldn't do it. We tried telling her that she could only have it at nap time, but that didn't work. She would just cry for it, or climb up and get it. I finally decided TODAY WAS THE DAY!

When she got up this morning I took her through the house and we tried to find all of her binky's. We put them into a ziplock bag. I told her that she is a big girl now and we were going to throw them away. She started to bawl - you know, to the point where she can't catch her breath. I felt so horrible. Here I am, one of the people she loves and trusts the very most, and I was taking her favorite thing in the whole world and throwing it away. It was extremely difficult and I felt like such a horrible person doing it.

However, she calmed down after about 15 minutes and has been fine for the rest of the day, only asking a few times for the binky - I remind her that they are gone, and she moves on to something else. She did cry for a bit when I laid her down for her nap, but not for long. Hopefully she will forget her beloved binkies soon.

Good for you. I am sure that'll be tough, but at least she won't be one of those 4 year olds with crooked teeth because they're still sucking on their binkie. She's so cute! Good luck!

Good for all of you, Steph. I've always been happy none of mine took one, so I wouldn't have to go through the binky-removal process. :> (but blankies, on the other hand...) I think you said the right thing - that is what usually works with my kids (you are a big kid, etc). In fact, Caroline is totally out of diapers even at night because she was so eager to send her last pack to "baby kalia." No kidding! I have half a pack of size 4's if you want them. :>

Well done. We wimped out and still haven't done it. The kids only use them at sleep times and they are usually happy to leave them in their beds when they get up. We just haven't worked up the courage.
